Someone has already written the quote, the political rant or the "real women" lecture. Then the post sits there in white text on a dark navy square, waiting for a picture it was never going to get. You open a template to make a joke and there is nothing to work with. Plain colour, no face, no scene. So you type the whole argument out yourself, in capitals, and hit post. A relative shares a wall of text about what a real man does, a real woman does, a real patriot does. Nobody asked, nobody can find the source, and it still collects four hundred shares before lunch. Some people reach for a blank canvas because the idea is the only thing they have. Others reach for it because they have a quote, a grudge and a lot of line breaks. Sometimes the same person manages both before the kettle boils. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a plain dark navy square with no subject at all, and on Meme Generator it became the default home for posts that are only words: quotes, rants, one-line gags and the odd "Black Sea" pun. It spread because it asks for nothing, with no template to learn and no face to match, so anyone with a thought and a keyboard could use it.
