The smoke alarm in the hall has been chirping for three weeks. Every flatmate has heard it. Each one has decided it's somebody else's battery. See? Nobody cares. You post a photo of your sourdough with a two hundred word caption about your starter, who has a name. Two likes: your mum and an account selling sunglasses. Your brother announces at Sunday lunch that he's "thinking of going vegan". The table goes silent for a second. Then your gran asks if anyone's using the gravy. You email the whole office to say the fire alarm test is at 11. At 11 the alarm goes off. Nobody moves. One man puts on bigger headphones. **Why it caught on:** in Jurassic Park (1993) Wayne Knight's Dennis Nedry, the park's programmer, shrugs off the warnings with "See? Nobody cares" while he switches off the security, and the shrug fits every announcement that expected applause and got the gravy.
