Why it caught on: in "Mid-Life Crustacean" (season 3, 2003) Mr. Krabs is in a mid-life slump, so SpongeBob and Patrick give him their idea of a wild night: elf hats and a fantasy board game, with SpongeBob asking again and again whether he's feeling it now. The line became the internet's way of asking someone if a very small thrill has kicked in yet.
